Texas Tech University has powered a bit of sprawl thanks to growth and the vibrant energy emanating from the college campus at the heart of Lubbock. And while the outskirts of the city have that dusty Texas charm, nestled among the patchwork streets is a network of timeless dives that channel bits of roadhouse, bits of neighborhood corner bar, bits of college affordability.
The Texas Cafe & Bar (formerly known and currently known to locals as ‘The Spoon’) serves up a vibe very much on the roadhouse end of the spectrum, a cavernous spot populated by live music nearly nightly. Supplying a more polished experience, Flippers Tavern across town gets its name from an intense devotion to pinball in the form of tables, decorations and even drinks.
And be sure to both go to the right Lone Star Oyster Bar (34th Street of course) and keep your eyes peeled for a massive Ric Flair mural fittingly welcoming all drinkers inside.
