Strip mall dive bars are common, but few are able to carve out an identity squeezed into a standardized footprint as part of a larger commercial development. Rendezvous Lounge in Dublin, Ohio, is a notable exception, a feat made all the more impressive given the bar’s very wedged-in location partially obstructed from view thanks to the strip mall’s zig zag structure.

Sharing a block with an Indian grocery and a rental car facility, Rendezvous Lounge sits under a standard issue plastic sign inscribed with the name of the bar and its motto, “Hard to find and even harder to leave.” The bar lives up to that billing with a very lounge-like atmosphere behind vertical plans almost perpetually twisted shut. Maybe it is the carpeting throughout or the deep tones of floor, wall & ceiling, but Rendezvous Lounge no doubt earns the status of ‘cozy.’

A large bar occupies about half of the Rendezvous Lounge space, padded stools sitting atop tiling that exists only deep enough to accommodate those sitting at the bar. A low ceiling here adds a bit of depth and serves as the mounting location for televisions typically tuned to sports. Illuminated liquor bottles create a pretty standard dive bar display behind the bar, backed up by a long stretch of mirrored glass.

The warmth of Rendezvous Lounge is largely created by the short tables that surround the bar, all of them flanked by low, padded chairs capable of gently rolling over the bar’s omnipresent carpeting. Wood paneling runs about halfway up the bar’s walls, capped with a hint of brass before transitioning into what could probably be called a maroon paint color. Decorations here are sporadic, featuring a number of nods to Ohio State and a plastic lettered display board that details the bar’s drink offerings.

It should come as no surprise that Rendezvous Lounge feels like a very locals-heavy space, though the vibe inside was certainly welcoming to first-timers. Major events are usually met with a bit of food provided by the bar complemented by potluck items contributed by patrons. A budding Souper Bowl tradition has taken hold in recent years, offering an array of delicious soups as backdrop to the Super Bowl. Soup feels like an apt analogy for Rendezvous Lounge, the vibe here warm, inviting and relaxed.

Amenities here are sparse as the space feels intentionally constructed to aid in lowkey conversations, most of the square footage devoted to the bar’s low tables. There is, however, an electronic dart board up front, a cornhole arcade game in back and of course a digital jukebox to provide diversion for (or from) whoever you came with.
