Oregon Dive Bar Guide

For anyone with even a passing familiarity with Portland, finding out that the city is hub to an impressively deep well of highly regarded dive bars should come as no surprise. The West Coast certainly supports its dive bar communities to great effect, but Portland makes a case for one of the true hotbeds not just in the region, but nationwide.

Gil’s Speakeasy Tavern, Reel M Inn, The Alibi Tiki Lounge, it is hard to know which recommendation to lead with, but Reel M Inn makes a strong case not only because of its overall ambiance but also the availability of beloved pressure-fried chicken, making it a dual threat embarkation point for a voyage through the city’s other offerings. A nice dose of nautical theming can be found here, Sandy Hut and Ship Ahoy Tavern two excellent examples.

Of course, Oregon is more than just Portland and the scenic backdrop of the entire state makes for attractive dive bar hunting. M&J Tavern in Bend, Oregon, is one of the more beloved stops statewide, opened in 1946 and celebrated from time to time as the best dive in the state. Jackalope Lounge is a known favorite in Eugene and Snug Harbor in Lincoln City feels about as Oregon as it gets.
