Erin Rose

Erin Rose is a bit of a New Orleans miracle, somehow walking the tenuous line between proximity to Bourbon Street and holding a reputation as a locals-friendly, service industry-focused, true neighborhood dive bar. Despite sitting just a matter of feet away from the tourist-trap-to-end-all-tourist-traps that is Bourbon Street, the deep history of the structure that now holds Erin Rose sets a profoundly unique and New Orleans-authentic tone.

The building that today houses Erin Rose was erected in the late 1800s as a residence before conversion into a bar during the 1950s. Local bar magnate Jim Monaghan took control of Erin Rose during the early 1980s, promptly adding his name to the bar’s title, christening it Monaghan’s Erin Rose. Monaghan’s bar holdings across the city cycled through 30 unique New Orleans bars, Monaghan controlling as many as eight such bars at one time. Fellow beloved dive bar Molly’s at the Market was perhaps the flagship location of Monaghan’s rolling empire.

When Monaghan passed in 2001, he left the business to the bar’s manager and a business partner, the name at that time reverted back to its current, simpler moniker, Erin Rose. As with most businesses in New Orleans, Erin Rose has evolved only slightly since the shift in ownership, a good thing in the world of dive bars and a testament to the city’s appreciation for authenticity. That dedication to the New Orleans community is reflected appropriately in the bar’s slogan, “Local prices. Local chaos. Local love.”

Though Molly’s at the Market is the generally accepted origination point of the Frozen Irish Coffee, the Monaghan connection between Molly’s and Erin Rose conveyed the sale of the slush-like concoction across both bars. As the bar’s name and signature drink suggest, Erin Rose is indeed an Irish pub by theme, but the vibe here is very much New Orleans hole-in-the-wall punctuated by Irish decorations rather than some kind of snug-filled replication of a traditional Irish pub.

The visuals here are intense, the extremely limited square footage crammed with all manner of decoration, covering every vertical and horizontal surface in the space. The trademark here, found on the sign above the door and throughout Erin Rose, is the bar’s logo, a shamrock topped with a rose at its center. The image is replicated in neon form behind the bar and can be found sprinkled through Erin Rose.

Seating here is limited largely to the long bar that takes up most of the space inside. Stools curl around the L-shaped bar and a long rail along the opposite wall provides a perch for beers procured from a selection that of course includes Guinness alongside New Orleans staples like Abita. Suggestively, a the largest and most eye-catching of the decorations found inside is a long plastic sign that reads “Prescriptions,” which can only be a good sign as far as dive bars go.

Easy to miss is a back bar that opens up just slightly wider than the more cramped front room. Even easier to miss is the presence of Killer Poboys, a well-loved purveyor of, you guessed it, po’boys found in the rear of the New Orleans dive bar. Killer Poboys was so successful out of this first, bar-based location that it has since expanded to a second, standalone location.
