In Short

The idea of a smoking-allowed dive bar in the heart of Philadelphia might spark an image of a worn, dusty appearance, but Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar is well put together, down to the very modern-looking sign above the front door. Established in 1974 by Veronica "Bonnie" Leone, the bar is today owned and operated by her daughter, Maria.

Field Note

The sign outside looks vaguely like a sign that might hang over a small, hole-in-the-wall Spanish tapas-style restaurant. Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar is about as far away from that ideal as possible, one of the last smoking-permitted dive bars in Philadelphia and unsurprisingly home to an old-school cigarette vending machine. There are no tapas to be consumed here.

Founder Veronica “Bonnie” Leone purchased the space in 1974, taking over a space already functioning as a bar. Bonnie of course lent her name to the bar and cultivated what is persistently described as a family-like atmosphere over the following few decades. As with any great Philadelphia dive bar, Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar focused heavily on the local neighborhood, Bonnie often staying after her shift to drink a few with regulars and locals. Bonnie’s daughter, Maria Lauer, operates the bar today.

Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar operates no Instagram or Facebook account, appropriate given the bar’s focus on cultivating local community. Affordable drink pricing is very much part of the bar’s appeal, the classic Citywide Special beer & shot combination running as low as $6 here, one of the cheapest such offerings in Philadelphia. The bar’s limited food menu is similarly inexpensive, esteemed options like hot pockets, microwave mac & cheese and popcorn available for $2 a piece.

The idea of a smoking-permitted dive bar might conjure up images of weathered, browning walls and, but Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar is as structured and presentable as any Philadelphia dive bar. Decorations here are spaced out rather than all-encompassing, the only slight bit of chaos emanating from the red string light that snakes unpredictably across many of the Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar surfaces. A large chalkboard proclaims that day’s food & drink specials and often a bit of encouragement, such as the heartening phrase, “Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar Loves You.”

The space is split into two rooms, a lower, main area just inside the front door filled exclusively by a simple bar counter supported by a small set of stools. The area behind the bar is downright minimalist by dive bar standards, the bar’s beer & liquor options organized neatly in front of a classic mirrored surface behind the row of bottles. Refreshingly, the bar’s limited set of four taps is typically populated by dive bar favorites, including a typical lineup of PBR, Miller High Life and Rolling Rock, a murderer’s row of dive-friendly domestics.

Up a short flight of stairs, a second room is devoted entirely to two rows of low tables & chairs atop clean, modern-looking tiling. A pair of televisions can be found here, as can a long row of mirrors for those keeping up on their Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar appearances. Everything in this back room is bathed in the soft, attractive lighting that comes from multiple strands of string lights.
