Toulouse Dive Bar

Toulouse Dive Bar is another French Quarter dive bar holdout amidst the absolute chaos of tourist-heavy Bourbon Street just a few feet away. The structure’s history is forever tied to legendary heavy metal and rock live music bar The Dungeon, opened in 1969 on this site. Bands were hosted here and notably, some of the legendary acts in heavy rock also hung out here, including KISS and Queen, according to The Dungeon’s now-defunct web site. A sign for The Dungeon still hangs here just a few feet away from the wooden Toulouse Dive Bar sign.

The Dungeon’s long run finally ended in October 2025 and Toulouse Dive Bar opened almost immediately after that (at least by bar operation standards) in December of the same year. As the short time period suggests, changes were made but generally speaking, much of the space remains the same, including the unique quirk of a bathroom hidden behind a bookcase, a Dungeon holdover referred to informally as the ‘hidden library.’

Unchanged are the mirrors inside Toulouse Dive Bar that certainly connect to the space’s Dungeon past. Each of the three mirrors that line one of the bar’s walls are surrounded by an avalanche of sculpted human skills, each mirror bay illuminated in soft red light. Perhaps due in part to the short turnover between bar concepts, the rest of the space inside Toulouse Dive Bar is fairly minimalist. A pool table sits above red & black checkered tile, flanked on one side by a set of gaming machines and on another, the long, wooden bar counter.

In true New Orleans style, Toulouse Dive Bar lists its closing time as 6 AM each day, though the bar has the good sense to stay closed for at least a few hours at that point, opening back up in the early afternoon, depending on day of the week. In similar epic fashion, a standard happy hour can be found here between 4 PM and 7 PM every day, but more interestingly, a subsequent late-night happy hour runs 12 AM to 3 AM each night.

Toulouse Dive Bar is part of a mini-dive bar complex of sorts with sister bar Molly’s on Toulouse next door (not to be confused with fellow New Orleans dive bar Molly’s at the Market). Where Toulouse Dive Bar showcases its Dungeon-friendly roots, Molly’s is a self-proclaimed Irish-themed dive bar, offering a contrast in styles just one door apart.

Notably, though many locals-friendly bars in the French Quarter wading through tourists often lean toward serving New Orleans natives as much as possible, Toulouse Dive Bar strikes a slightly more friendly tone, welcoming tourists and locals alike. All told, Toulouse Dive Bar is the kind of spot to duck out of the insanity outside in favor of a bit of dive bar purity, the sum total of attractions here including a pool table, gaming machine, jukebox, alcohol and not much else. In a good way.
